As of June 1, 2021 revisions to the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations (MDMER) came into effect. The revised regulation will affect over 100 metal and diamond mines across Canada that discharge effluent to the freshwater or marine environment. The revised MDMER is administered by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and the changes are aimed at strengthening the effluent quality standards and improving efficiency of environmental effects monitoring (EEM).

The revisions include the addition of parameters not previously included in the regulation, changes to some effluent parameter allowable limits, and slightly different rules for existing vs. new mines. In some instances, provincial and territorial regulations for metal and diamond mines may not exactly match the MDMER. It is important to identify such discrepancies to ensure compliance with all regulators.

Water management Proper water management is the cornerstone of mine life cycle planning.

Successful projects are about more than meeting environmental standards. They require strategic foresight to manage your data to navigate such regulatory challenges.

Achieving the best outcome for both needs more than just environmental monitoring - it needs Environmental Intelligence. Ecometrix is here to help.
